LA Battles Record-Breaking High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Weather.
In the wake of heavy downpours that led to inundation across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now grappling with unusually warm weather for late February.
Record-Shattering Heat
During the day Friday, the mercury reached 91°F (33°C) in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on forecast charts for the region.
Public Health Alerts
Authorities stated that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.
A Sharp Shift
This dramatic increase in mercury comes on the heels of a intense storm system that pummeled the state earlier in the week. That system unleashed high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to higher elevations, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Tragically, the storm also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead a cooldown is coming. Temperatures were predicted to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in central Los Angeles by late Friday.
Several cities that reached ninety degrees included Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.
For the weekend, central LA can anticipate weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the week ahead.
