Are You Able to Crack It? That Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Shaped our Modern World
One can find many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, the same quantity of processed timber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this rapid mechanical cutter, which converted timber into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct ships more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s first true factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its circular motion to up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. Another component changed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the log to the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the wood forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Each element was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to integrate these parts in order that they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each downward motion while moving with each upward stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
